Martin Lewis (1881-1962)

Lewis was an acknowledged master of the intaglio techniques of printmaking, experimenting with multiple processes including etching, aquatint, engraving and drypoint. A highly skilled printer, Lewis created magnificent impressions that captured the energy, bustle and occasional solitude of all aspects of city life in New York. With his remove to Connecticut in 1932, Lewis instigated another topic through his printmaking: country life. This firmly entrenched Lewis as a prominent America scene artist, who captured the intersection between the urban and rural environments and shed light on the slowly emerging suburban culture. Ref. Canaletto

Målarstilen är saklig och Canaletto kan ha haft hjälp av ett tekniskt hjälpmedel, en camera obscura. Men Canaletto har trots detta tagit sig vissa friheter och placerat triumfbågens text som är synlig från nordsidan så att vi ser den från sydsidan. Konstantinbågen är en triumfbåge i Rom, uppförd 315 till minne av kejsar Konstantins seger över Maxentius vid Pons Milvius 312.

Så var målningen klar. Det var första gången jag prövade att måla vita pioner. Blommorna var knepiga och gjordes om flera gånger. Tekniken är olja i tunna transparenta skikt. Jag får pröva någon matt fernissa för att färgskikten skall klara sig. Klicka på bilden för att se den i original.
